Synopsis: Comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college, a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash. Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? Deathtrap provides twists and turns of devilish cleverness, and offers hilariously sudden shocks in such abundance that audiences will be spellbound until the very last moment.
Character Breakdown:
Sidney Bruhl (M, lead) 50-65: A famous writer of Broadway thrillers. His recent string of flops has him considering just about anything to be back on top with a hit show. He is impressive, polished, manipulative, a bit flamboyant and self-assured. Must be comfortable with stage combat.
Myra Bruhl (F, lead) 35-50: Sydney’s self-effacing but charming wife. Sophisticated, upper class and supportive of her husband’s efforts to stay on top. She may be more “willing” than at first glance.
Clifford Anderson (M, lead) 25-35: An aspiring young playwright. Preppy, good-looking, intelligent and charming, all of which covers an ambitious and deceptive streak. He is determined to become a successful playwright. Must be comfortable with stage combat.
Helga ten Dorp (F, supporting) 45-65: A famous German psychic who is visiting the neighbors of the Bruhl’s. She is nosey, quirky, struggles with her English, disarming and brave.
Porter Milgrim (M, supporting) 50-60: The Bruhl family lawyer. An imposing man of substance who is on the lookout for Sidney’s best interests. A friend of the family.
